All of the above sums up very well the plot of Severance, the series that has been crowned as the queen of Apple TV. I already said it in one of my previous reviews, the apple company is stomping. They have clear objectives, I have no doubt that they are focused on quality and in this case in a product that could hardly be accepted by other traditional producers. Only HBO is the one that would risk with a similar production.
For me it is one of the best series of the year. How did they manage to produce it? They were given the go-ahead for this project written by Dan Erickson, whom I didn't know any previous work, but he has left me in love with his story. What a great idea this man has had. I got to the right people, the series has Ben Stiller as producer and director of most of its episodes.
Yes, that's the same Ben Stiller you're thinking of. The one you probably know from his dangerous Blue Stare in Zoolander. The actor who has made us laugh in countless movies like The Cable Guy, Something About Mary, among some of the most well known, we've all seen some of his movies. For those who didn't know, he also produces and directs. With his Zoolander look, he takes advantage of all the cast and space to give the fun part that this hard-to-classify series needs.
Sci-fi, thriller, corporate espionage, comedy, drama, even slightly disturbing scenes that easily fall into the psychological horror category. Could this be the reason I loved it? Watching each episode gave me that detachment effect, I was so engrossed in what I was watching that I completely forgot about my life, about everything around me.
Todo lo anterior resume muy bien la trama de Severance, la serie que ha sido coronada como la reina de Apple TV. Ya lo dije en una de mis anteriores críticas, la compañía de la manzana está pisando fuerte. Tienen los objetivos claros, no me cabe duda de que están centrados en la calidad y en este caso en un producto que difícilmente podría ser aceptado por otras productoras tradicionales. Solo HBO es la que arriesgaría con una producción similar.
Para mí es una de las mejores series del año. ¿Cómo han conseguido producirla? Les dieron el visto bueno a este proyecto escrito por Dan Erickson, al que no conocía ningún trabajo anterior, pero me ha dejado enamorado con su historia. Que gran idea ha tenido este hombre. Llego a las personas adecuadas, la serie cuenta con Ben Stiller como productor y director de la mayoría de sus episodios.
Sí, es el mismo Ben Stiller en el que estás pensando. El que seguramente conoces por su peligrosa Mirada Azul en Zoolander. El actor que nos ha hecho reír en innumerables películas como The Cable Guy, Something About Mary, entre algunas de las más conocidas, todos hemos visto alguna de sus películas. Para los que no lo sabían, también se dedica a producir y dirigir. Con su look a lo Zoolander, aprovecha todo el reparto y el espacio para dar la parte divertida que necesita esta serie difícil de clasificar.
Ciencia ficción, thriller, espionaje corporativo, comedia, drama, incluso escenas ligeramente perturbadoras que fácilmente entran en la categoría de terror psicológico. ¿Será esta la razón por la que me encantó? Ver cada episodio me producía ese efecto de desapego, estaba tan absorto en lo que estaba viendo que me olvidaba por completo de mi vida, de todo lo que me rodeaba.
My other self
Let's go back to the central argument. Sounds good, I would agree in a heartbeat to undergo this process. Let's go. Put a chip in a part of my brain that separates my personal life from my work life. How divine it must be to have dinner at home without knowing anything about work and equally, to be at work without remembering my wretched neighbor who every night listens to reggaeton at full volume and doesn't let me sleep.
But not everything is a bed of roses. By accepting the process of separation I am acting selfishly, I only think about myself and not about my other self. It will be my body, my face, my voice, it will have my name, but the separation makes another me emerge, without knowing anything about my life, my tastes, about how I really am. Do you realize how juicy this plot premise is?
My other self will wake up in a room, like a blank canvas, where a new life will begin, without knowing what sleep is, because they will only realize that it is a different day when they see that they have other clothes on, but they are not aware of space-time, that other self will exist only within these facilities. They live locked up without knowing the outside world, because they have only seen a video of the outside self explaining who it is and what it should do according to orders.
That other self will start asking questions. It doesn't matter that the company's protocols, which resemble those of a religious sect, forbid it. Reasoning is what separates us from the other species and puts us at the top, we dominate the planet for a reason. That same power of reasoning will manifest itself in some of the characters, causing many problems that will lead even the most passive employees to rethink their existence and want to know what the outside world is like.
The calm of my other self will be interrupted. An existential dilemma comes into play, a brain divided into two different personalities. Because the outer self may like chocolates, but the inner self may detest them. My outer self may like women, but my inner self may like men. Even if they share the same body and the same mind, they are two completely different people.
Work Satire
You've met your monthly data processing quota - hooray! It's time to give you a treat, let's play crazy time to the beat of your favorite songs. Flash that big smile in front of your immediate boss and have a good time with your co-workers.
The solid plots of this story come loaded with a crude satire of big corporations and the way they run work environments. One thing that blew me away, although I never worked for a biotech corporation like the characters in the series, I did spend many years in a toxic work environment. Anyone who has ever been employed by a company and worked with a group of people in cubicle offices will identify many situations that are taken to the extreme here, to be both funny and a fierce critique against today's work environments.
There is a lot of irony in all this, because I already told you which corporation broadcasts the series. In each episode, which develops the story especially seeing those minimalist facilities, which give personality to the series, I was also reminded of Apple, a company that everyone knows has always received criticism about the labor exploitation in the factories it has in underdeveloped countries. I am sure that the brand's consultants did the relevant studies and did not mind that someone could make analogies between what is seen in the series and the real company. This is something that can be allowed when you have a lot of power.
Mi otro yo
Volvamos al argumento central. Suena bien, Yo aceptaría sin pensarlo dos veces someterme a este proceso. Vamos. Poner un chip en una parte de mi cerebro que separe mi vida personal de mi vida laboral. Qué divino debe ser cenar en casa sin saber nada del trabajo e igualmente, estar en el trabajo sin acordarme de mi desgraciado vecino que todas las noches escucha reggaeton a todo volumen y no me deja dormir.
Pero no todo es un camino de rosas. Al aceptar el proceso de separación estoy actuando de forma egoísta, sólo pienso en mí y no en mi otro yo. Será mi cuerpo, mi cara, mi voz, tendrá mi nombre, pero la separación hace que surja otro yo, sin saber nada de mi vida, de mis gustos, de cómo soy en realidad. ¿Te das cuenta de lo jugosa que es esta premisa argumental?
Mi otro yo se despertará en una habitación, como un lienzo en blanco, donde comenzará una nueva vida, sin saber lo que es el sueño, porque sólo se darán cuenta de que es un día diferente cuando vean que tienen otra ropa puesta, pero no son conscientes del espacio-tiempo, ese otro yo existirá sólo dentro de estas instalaciones. Viven encerrados sin conocer el mundo exterior, porque sólo han visto un vídeo del Yo exterior explicando quién es y qué debe hacer según las órdenes.
Ese otro yo comenzará a hacer preguntas. No importa que los protocolos de la empresa, que se parecen a los de una secta religiosa, lo prohíban. El razonamiento es lo que nos separa de las demás especies y nos sitúa en la cima, por algo dominamos el planeta. Ese mismo poder de raciocinio se manifestará en algunos de los personajes, causando muchos problemas que llevarán incluso a los empleados más pasivos a replantearse su existencia y a querer saber cómo es el mundo exterior.
La calma de mi otro yo se verá interrumpida. Entra en juego un dilema existencial, un cerebro dividido en dos personalidades diferentes. Porque al yo exterior le pueden gustar los chocolates, pero el yo interior puede detestarlos. A mi yo exterior le pueden gustar las mujeres, pero a mi yo interior le pueden gustar los hombres. Aunque compartan el mismo cuerpo y la misma mente, son dos personas completamente diferentes.
Sátira laboral
Has cumplido tu cuota mensual de procesamiento de datos. ¡Hurra! Es hora de darte un premio, vamos a jugar a la hora loca al ritmo de tus canciones favoritas. Enseña esa gran sonrisa delante de tu jefe inmediato y pasa un buen rato con tus compañeros de trabajo.
Los sólidos argumentos de esta historia vienen cargados de una cruda sátira de las grandes corporaciones y la forma en que manejan los ambientes de trabajo. Algo que me dejó boquiabierto, aunque nunca trabajé para una corporación biotecnológica como los personajes de la serie, sí pasé muchos años en un entorno laboral tóxico. Cualquiera que haya sido empleado de una empresa y haya trabajado con un grupo de personas en oficinas con cubículos, identificará muchas situaciones que aquí se llevan al extremo, para ser gracioso y a la vez una crítica feroz contra los ambientes de trabajo actuales.
Hay mucha ironía en todo esto, porque ya les dije qué corporación emite la serie. En cada episodio, que desarrolla la historia sobre todo al ver esas instalaciones minimalistas, que dan personalidad a la serie, me recordó también a Apple, una empresa que todo el mundo sabe que siempre ha recibido críticas sobre la explotación laboral en las fábricas que tiene en países subdesarrollados. Estoy seguro de que los asesores de la marca hicieron los estudios pertinentes y no les importó que alguien pudiera hacer analogías entre lo que se ve en la serie y la empresa real. Es algo que se puede permitir cuando se tiene mucho poder.
What is the story?
If you're still not clear, the series tells us about the lives of the employees of Lumon Industries. Mark, Dylan, Irving and Helly, a new member of the data refinement department, a job that even they don't know what it is. What do they do? What does Lumons do? This new employee will cause serious problems, while Mark must take over the management of that department, following the apparent firing of his best friend Petey. Has he quit? What really happened to Petey?
Much of the plot of this first season focuses on Mark, it is from this character that we will learn more about his life outside of work, his family, the reasons why he came to work in Lumens but the indescribable ending leaves the doors open to delve into the lives of Mark's other colleagues, of whom we will know a few things that are shown, enough to leave us wanting to know more.
Not only will we see the subordinates, the direct bosses have their place in the story. Harmony emerges as the great villain, next to her, there is the supervisor of the whole area Seth, who with the help of the head of security Doug will maintain order when some events threaten to disrupt the labor peace.
Within all this great conglomerate of long, whitish corridors, there are other departments and employees who only have contact with our protagonists at certain times. Burt, the head of the Optics and Design division, will strike up a friendship with Irving, despite the fact that Lumens protocol forbids any emotional closeness. It's hard to resist passion. There's also the enigmatic Mrs. Casey, who serves as a wellness counselor, a place where employees are sent as a reward, while Harmony watches and listens to them from her office.
How does this all tie together? What will be the problem that will bring them out of their work lethargy? What is the Lumens company hiding? What are the company's sinister plans? Where is Petey? How will this story continue in its second season? To the delight of all of us who have been dazzled by the series, they announced before the finale that they were approving a second season, with the same cast and crew, something that after seeing the season finale, they surely had already planned.
Loneliness and pain
To finish, hoping that I have already convinced you to watch this gem of a series, it was clear to me that the dramatic part focuses on the loneliness of the human being and the need to escape from the problems that affect us. Mark, the main protagonist, decides to enter into this project of mental separation, because it is the only way he has to get away from the pain of a great loss he had.
Irving's character, also seems a very lonely person, maybe he is facing another kind of family loss, but at the same time, it seems that a part of his subconscious manifests itself in his daily life, using art as a way to express that dark dream that haunts him in its two versions.
Even the bosses, despite not having the chip implanted and having a normal life, are solitary beings who drag possible traumas from the past and take refuge in the work environment, to forget for a while everything that generates pain and sadness.
Although many do not admit it, in real life it is very common for people to focus on dedicating more time to work, either because they feel unhappy at home, because they do not want to argue with their partner because of the typical marital disagreements, or because they simply find a little peace in those offices, a tranquility that no longer exists at home. Reality is always more disturbing than fiction stories.
¿Cuál es la historia?
Si aún no lo tienes claro, la serie nos cuenta la vida de los empleados de Industrias Lumon. Mark, Dylan, Irving y Helly, un nuevo miembro del departamento de refinamiento de datos, un trabajo que ni siquiera ellos saben de qué se trata. ¿A qué se dedican? ¿Qué hace Lumons? Esta nueva empleada causará serios problemas, mientras que Mark debe asumir la dirección de ese departamento, tras el aparente despido de su mejor amigo Petey. ¿Ha renunciado? ¿Qué pasó realmente con Petey?
Gran parte de la trama de esta primera temporada se centra en Mark, es de este personaje del que conoceremos más sobre su vida fuera del trabajo, su familia, los motivos por los que entró a trabajar en Lumens pero el indescriptible final deja las puertas abiertas para ahondar en la vida de los demás compañeros de Mark, de los que conoceremos algunas cosas que se muestran, lo suficiente como para dejarnos con ganas de saber más.
No sólo veremos a los subordinados, los jefes directos tienen su lugar en la historia. Harmony se perfila como la gran villana, junto a ella, está el supervisor de toda el área Seth, que con la ayuda del jefe de seguridad Doug mantendrá el orden cuando algunos acontecimientos amenacen con alterar la paz laboral.
Dentro de todo este gran conglomerado de largos y blanquecinos pasillos, hay otros departamentos y empleados que sólo tienen contacto con nuestros protagonistas en determinados momentos. Burt, el jefe de la división de Óptica y Diseño, entablará una amistad con Irving, a pesar de que el protocolo de Lumens prohíbe cualquier cercanía emocional. Es difícil resistirse a la pasión. También está la enigmática Sra. Casey, que ejerce de consejera de bienestar, un lugar al que los empleados son enviados como recompensa, mientras Harmony les observa y escucha desde su despacho.
¿Cómo se relaciona todo esto? ¿Cuál será el problema que los sacará de su letargo laboral? ¿Qué esconde la empresa Lumens? ¿Cuáles son los siniestros planes de la empresa? ¿Dónde está Petey? ¿Cómo continuará esta historia en su segunda temporada? Para alegría de todos los que hemos quedado deslumbrados por la serie, anunciaron antes del final que aprobaban una segunda temporada, con el mismo reparto y equipo, algo que después de ver el final de temporada, seguro que ya tenían previsto.
Soledad y dolor
Para terminar, esperando que ya los haya convencido de ver esta joya de serie, me quedó claro que la parte dramática se centra en la soledad del ser humano y la necesidad de evadirse de los problemas que nos afectan. Mark, el protagonista principal, decide entrar en este proyecto de separación mental, porque es la única forma que tiene de alejarse del dolor por una gran pérdida que tuvo.
El personaje de Irving, también parece una persona muy solitaria, tal vez se enfrenta a otro tipo de pérdida familiar, pero al mismo tiempo, parece que una parte de su subconsciente se manifiesta en su vida cotidiana, utilizando el arte como una forma de expresar ese oscuro sueño que le persigue en sus dos versiones.
Incluso los jefes, a pesar de no tener el chip implantado y tener una vida normal, son seres solitarios que arrastran posibles traumas del pasado y se refugian en el entorno laboral, para olvidar durante un tiempo todo aquello que les genera dolor y tristeza.
Aunque muchos no lo admitan, en la vida real es muy común que las personas se centren en dedicar más tiempo al trabajo, bien porque se sienten infelices en casa, porque no quieren discutir con su pareja por las típicas desavenencias conyugales, o porque simplemente encuentran un poco de paz en esos despachos, una tranquilidad que ya no existe en casa. La realidad siempre es más inquietante que las historias de ficción.
Severance is a must-see series. Drama and comedy. Science fiction and psychological thriller. If you manage to see beyond its seemingly simple plot, you will be very satisfied with the best series so far this year. I loved it from beginning to end. My only regret is that I don't know when the second season will be released.

Severance es una serie imprescindible. Drama y comedia. Ciencia ficción y thriller psicológico. Si consigues ver más allá de su aparente sencilla trama, quedarás muy satisfecho con la mejor serie en lo que va de año. A mí me encantó de principio a fin. Lo único que lamento es que no sé cuándo se estrenará la segunda temporada.
